Motion Sickness (Travel Sickness)
Many people dread travelling due to motion/travel sickness. Even short journeys by by car, bus or train can result in discomfort. For some motion sickness is a minor annoyance. However, for most a plane flight or long journey simply isn't possible without distress due to extreme nausea and dizziness which can often lead to vomiting.
Travel/motion sickness can produce a range of symptoms:
- Cold / clammy feeling
- Increase in swallowing
- Feeling Faint
- Yawning and drowsiness
- Retching or vomiting
Why Does Motion Sickness Occur?
Motion sickness the result of a 'conflict' of information between your senses. Our balance is controlled by our inner ear. This together with our muscles, and eyes tell our brain how your body is moving. When we are in motion each is sending out different messages to the brain. This confusion causes the queasiness and discomfort.
For example, during air or sea travel the inner ear senses motion. However, looking around you it appears the cabin is stationary.. Your body is sensing the rolling motions of the craft that you are unable to see from inside the cabin. The brain cannot make sense of these conflicting messages and the confusion causes the sickness.
